[新聞英語] 經過了一夜颱風，Nini家的遮雨棚被樹刮出一個破洞。

希望大家家裏都平平安安，開心地過一個颱風假！

今天看新聞，各地陸續有災情傳出，所以今天的課程來作一些颱風災難相關的後續補充。

1. Typhoon Saola lumbers to Taiwan.

蘇拉颱風行徑緩慢對台灣造成災情。

* lumber (v.) 除了可當常見的伐木以外，另有拖累的意思。

* He is a very busy businessman, so he doesn’t want to lumber himself with a family.

他是個非常忙碌的生意人，因此他不願有家室拖累他。

2. All Cities and counties have all announced work and school closures for the day.

所有的縣市都已經宣佈今天停止上班上課。

* 放颱風假在會話裡可用：We have a day off because of the typhoon. 

3. The nation must be on high alert as the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said Typhoon Saola

would come closer to Taiwan today, bringing torrential rain nationwide.

全國必須高度警戒。中央氣象局說蘇拉颱風今天會接近台灣並帶來豪雨。

* torrential rain 是大豪雨的意思。一般下大雨就用heavy rain/ rainstorm，

但像颱風這種豪大雨，就可用torrential rain。

4. Nearly 100,000 sandbags prepared by the government were snapped up as the CWB called on residents

to take special precautions against torrential rain and flooding.

由於中央氣象局呼籲民眾做好預防措施以防豪雨及淹水，政府準備了近10萬個沙包已被搶購一空。

* snap up (v.) 搶購，爭購。

People usually snap up bargains during the special sale. 人們通常會在特賣會時搶購特價品。

* call on (v.) 呼籲。

President called on the nation to unite in the fight against the current economic crisis.

總統呼籲國家團結一致 , 以克服當前的經濟危機。

5. Authorities evacuated nearly 600 residents from New Taipei City.

政府從新北市撤離近600位居民。

* evacuate (v.) 撤離，疏散。被撤離的民眾我們稱evacuee (n.)。 

6. The highest accumulated rainfall was detected in Taipingshan.

根據觀測，最高累積雨量在太平山。

* accumulated rainfall 累積雨量

* detect (v.) 偵測。

The rat detected the danger, so it slipped away. 老鼠察覺到危險所以就溜走了。

7. An electricity pole fell at the section near the TRA station in Yangmei since days of rain had eroded the pole’s base.

由於連日來的降雨，沖刷電線杆的地基，造成電線杆倒在臺鐵楊梅站附近。

* erode the base 是侵蝕地基的意思。
